It’s 10 days since 1,428 white-sided dolphins were killed on the shores of the Faroe Islands. A slow, cruel hunt that even seasoned whalers have deemed unethical, an entire super pod – slaughtered. Please don’t let the dolphins fade away, keep doing whatever you can. Write emails and letters, sign petitions, keep sharing the footage.

Even the staunchest defenders of traditional whaling in the Faroe Islands have condemned the “cruel and unnecessary” massacre  of a superpod of 1,428 dolphins, which were driven into shallow waters of the Skálabotnur beach on the island of Eysturoy on Sunday 12th September. Sea Shepherd stated the hunt was “the largest single killing of dolphins or pilot whales in the islands’ history”, with more animals perishing than in an entire season at the infamous “Cove” at Taiji, Japan.

Heri Petersen, who chairs the local Grind hunting association in the bay where the killing took place, said that far too many dolphins had been herded into the bay over too long a distance, with too few people waiting on the beach to kill them, prolonging their agony.“I’m appalled at what happened,” he told the local In.fo news site. “The dolphins lay on the beach writhing for far too long before they were killed.”

Hans Jacob Hermansen, the former chairmen of the Faroese Grind Association, which campaigns for the survival of the traditional hunt, told the local Kringvarp Føroya broadcaster that he was shocked by the event, which he said “destroys all the work we have done to preserve the Grind”.

“The world has become much smaller today, with everyone walking around with a camera in their pocket,” said his successor, Ólavur Sjúrðarberg. “This is a gift to those who wish us ill when it comes to the Grind.” “My guess is that most of the dolphins will be thrown in the trash or in a hole in the ground,” they said. “We should have quotas per district, and we should not kill dolphins.”

Captain Alex Cornelissen, the global chief executive of Sea Shepherd, which campaigns against whaling, said that in the midst of a global pandemic it was “absolutely appalling to see an attack on nature of this scale in the Faroe Islands”.

September 16, the Faroese Government release a statement.

“The Atlantic white-sided dolphin catch on Sunday 12 September has raised some issues about Atlantic white-sided dolphin catches, e.g. the number of dolphins taken in a single drive and hunting methods in dolphin drives. The situation on 12 September was extraordinary, mainly because the pod was several times larger than is usually the case. The pod outnumbered the second largest pod ever by more than three times, which resulted in severe difficulties once the animals had reached the bay…” read more »

Ambassador CEO Christian Verhounig has written to Faroese Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen stating that if there are ‘recurring incidents of dolphin hunting, as took place in September 2021,’ he will ‘reconsider the cruise line’s position and planned three future sailings to the Islands.’

He explained, ‘Tourism is one of the key drivers of commercial whaling and consuming whale meat poses a significant human health risk. In all of our communications to our cruise guests we will advise them to avoid consuming this product in destinations that they visit. We have also taken the decision not to include any excursions to oceanariums or experiences that involve captive marine mammals.’

The line will be monitoring the outcome of a review scheduled to be undertaken by the Faroes government on its commercial whaling policy and says it reserves the right to cancel ports of call where it is deemed any activity contradicts the cruise line’s pledge.
