Marine Connection is a registered charity based in the UK, working internationally on the protection, conservation and welfare of all cetaceans.
On August 8, 1970, orcas were rounded up and captured in Whidbey Island’s Penn Cove. Led by Don Goldsberry and Ted Griffin of Namu Inc., this particular event resulted in the deaths of five whales, plus the removal of seven calves from the Southern Resident Orca L Pod. Among the calves captured was the female orca, Tokitae, who was held in captivity at Miami Seaquarium for over half a century until her death on August 18, 2023.
