DECEMBER 2015 – FILM PROJECTION ON THE JAPANESE EMBASSY

Extract from ‘We Can Be Heroes by Sharon Bull

Jo’s recollections of their last hugely successful protest on Friday, December 18th 2015 speaks volumes to the passion in so many people’s hearts about the plight of the dolphins.

“It was a cold and grey winter’s day when hundreds of people adorned with bright lights, holding lanterns, candles and red roses lined the pavements outside the Japanese embassy in London. ‘One voice for the dolphins’ inspired others in India, Hong Kong, France, Australia and New York to stand in solidarity to expose Taiji’s crimes against nature. Together our voices rang out as one across the world. Together we cried out – ‘enough is enough!’ As it grew darker powerful imagery beamed across Piccadilly’s busy thoroughfare onto the embassy’s walls for the whole world to see. “Our light shines through the darkness. Our light will never fade it will only grow brighter. Our light states that we will never give up until this ends. We stand together as ‘One Voice’. The world is watching you.” – Jo Phillips

Nicole & Me

I was incredibly proud to be part of the dedicated team for the protest, ‘One Voice for the Dolphins of Taiji’, which saw hundreds of people standing outside London’s Japanese embassy, all speaking out in unity against Japan’s cruel capture and slaughter of dolphins and small whales.

I enjoyed helping to plan the event and making all the promotional graphics and videos for social media. However, there is just one person who encouraged and inspired me more than any other, and that is Nicole. She alone managed to achieve the unique and powerful projection onto the walls of the Japanese embassy, and believe you me; I know the trials she had to work through to succeed.

Candlelit vigil for dolphins

Powerful speeches were given by Will Travers, president of Born Free and Dominic Dyer, policy advisor for Born Free. A condolence book was passed around for people to write blessings for the dolphins and to also leave their messages asking Japan to end this cruel and unnecessary practice.

Maria Claudia Heidemann, pictured below danced on her stilts to bring awareness to the cause in a peaceful and artful way. At the end of the day, a beautiful and highly emotional candlelit vigil was given to remember those who had lost their lives in The Cove, Taiji, Japan.
