When you think of salmon, you might picture them thriving in their natural habitat. But for 70% of salmon consumed globally—and 100% of the Atlantic salmon sold in British supermarkets—the reality is grim. Confined to cramped cages, they suffer from obesity, deformities, and despair.

On average, over 1 in 4 Scottish farmed salmon die in the cages along our shores – the industry reported over 17 million fish deaths in 2023 alone. Poorly managed disease, lice and water quality see fish eaten alive or suffocating before they reach your plates.

Depression: A quarter of farmed salmon exhibit stress levels akin to depressed mammals, showing disinterest in food and lethargy.
Hearing Loss: 50 percent of farmed salmon have deformed ear bones, severely impairing their ability to navigate.
Scoliosis: Young salmon often endure spine deformities due to unnatural conditions in hatcheries.
Lice Infestations: These parasitic lice literally eat the fish alive, causing immense suffering and ultimately death.
Obesity: Farmed salmon are over-fed unhealthy diets, resulting in unnaturally high fat levels.

Open-net salmon farming is fundamentally unsustainable.
